HARRISONBURG, Va., Aug. 22, 2014 – With goals from junior forward Rachel Ivey (South Riding, Va./Freedom) and sophomore forward Sydney Braun-McLeod (Ottawa, Ontario/Glebe Collegiate Institute), the James Madison women's soccer team topped the University of Massachusetts 2-1 at University Park on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Fairfield Inn by Marriot JMU Invitational.
JMU improved to 2-0 on the season while UMass fell to 0-1-1 this year.
After battling through a quiet first half, the Dukes struck for a goal in the 51st minute when Ivey sent a low shot from 12 yards out just inside the right post. Ivey took one touch and fired the shot in after receiving a pass from sophomore forward Ashley Herndon (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) just outside the six-yard box.
JMU tallied the eventual game-winning goal 20 minutes later when Braun-McLeod's shot rang off the left post and in past UMass goalkeeper Danielle Kriscenski. The goal was again set up by Herndon, as the sophomore forward sent a cross through the box to Braun-McLeod waiting on the back post.
UMass cut the Dukes' lead in half in the 79th minute on a goal from Julia Weithofer, but that was all the Minutewomen could get by redshirt-junior goalkeeper Ellen Forrest (Midlothian, Va./James River). Forrest made two saves in the game and moved to 2-0 on the season while Kriscenski stopped five JMU shots and moved to 0-1-1 on the year. Overall, JMU outshot UMass 10-6.
For their efforts through the season's opening weekend, Herndon, Ivey, redshirt-senior forward Sam Lofton (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) and senior forward Katie Hyland (Islip, N.Y./Islip) were named to the JMU Invitational All-Tournament Team. Herndon finished the weekend with a goal and two assists while Lofton had two assists, both of which came in Friday night's 2-1 win over Xavier. Both Ivey and Hyland scored a goal in the tournament.
JMU returns to action Friday night, August 29, in Winston-Salem, N.C., against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. First kick is set for 7 p.m. Wake Forest opened the year ranked No. 21 in the NSCAA Preseason Top 25 poll.
