Brewer Runner-Up, JMU Ties For Seventh at UNCG Forest Oaks Event

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The James Madison University women's golf team slipped in the last 18 and tied for seventh at the UNCG Forest Oaks Fall Classic, Sept. 29-30. The two-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by UNCG, was played at Forest Oaks Golf Club (Par 72 – 6,267 yards) in Greensboro, North Carolina
The Dukes could not overcome a tough start to the day and finished the round at 21-over 309, putting them at 53-over 917 for the tournament in a tie with Charleston Southern. Elon won the team title at 35-over 899, six shots ahead of Rollins at 41-over 905 and nine shots better than Jacksonville in third at 44-over 908. Maryland was fourth at 45-over 909, with UNCW completing the top five teams at 46-over 910.
Senior Shabril Brewer (Herndon, Va./Westfield) moved up to tie for runner-up honors at 1-over 217 following a final-round 1-under 71 that included four birdies and three bogeys. It was her second consecutive top-10 finish as she has finished in the top 20 in all three events this year. It was her seventh career top-10 placing and her low score of the 2014 fall.
Junior Kelsey Solan (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) tied for 29th at 14-over 230, with freshman Laura Gomez-Ruiz (Malaga, Spain) next for the Dukes in a tie for 44th at 18-over 234. Freshman Gabrielle Weiss (Southern Pines, N.C./Pinecrest) tied for 67th with teammate junior Rachel Walker (Waxhaw, N.C./Marvin Ridge), who was playing as an individual, at 24-over 240. Senior Maria Andrea Legaspi (Quezon City, Philippines/St. Paul College-Pasig) was the final team player for JMU, tying for 83rd at 32-over 248.
Mercer's Katy Harris held on to her second-round lead and took home medalist honors at 1-under 215, two shots better than Brewer and UNCW's Annett Lyche. Jessica Welch of Jacksonville was fourth at 2-over 218, with Annie Dulman of Rollins in fifth at 3-over 219.
JMU heads back on the course Mon.-Tue., Oct. 13-14 for the Lady Pirate Invitational in Greenville, North Carolina. The two-day tournament, hosted by East Carolina, will be played at Greenville Country Club.
