Women's Golf Finishes Ninth at ECU Lady Pirate Intercollegiate

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The James Madison University women's golf team placed ninth at the 2014 Lady Pirate Intercollegiate, Oct. 13. The two-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by East Carolina University, was played at Greenville Country Club (Par 72 – 6,088 yards) in Greeenville, North Carolina.
The Dukes were unable to put it together in the final round and shot a 21-over 309 for the day to finish ninth at 53-over 917 (308-300-309). Georgia Regents University-Augusta ran away with the team title at 12-over 876, including an even-par 288 in the last round. Kennesaw State was second at 31-over 895, with Middle Tennessee State moving up three spots in the last 18 to finish third at 33-over 897. East Carolina was fourth at 35-over 899 with CAA-rival William & Mary rounding out the top five teams at 39-over 903.
Freshman Gabrielle Weiss (Southern Pines, N.C./Pinecrest) was the top JMU finisher in a tie for 19th after she shot a team-best 3-over 75 in the final round to finish at 10-over 226. Freshmen Laura Gomez-Ruiz (Malaga, Spain) was one shot back of Weiss at 11-over 227 in a tie for 23rd. Senior Shabril Brewer (Herndon, Va./Westfield) tied for 34th at 13-over 229, while senior Nikola Wessels (Muenster, Germany/Marienschule Muenster) shot her best round of the tournament with a 6-over 78 to tie for 78th at 26-over 242. Junior Kelsey Solan (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) was the final JMU team finisher at 29-over 245, tied for 81st. Playing as an individual, junior Rachel Walker (Waxhaw, N.C./Marvin Ridge) tied for 84th at 31-over 247.
Winthrop's Jennifer Dilger shot a 1-under 71 in the last 18 to take home medalist honors at 2-under 214, two shots ahead of Jessica Haigwood of Georgia Regents University-Augusta.
Madison will wrap up the fall portion of its 2014-15 schedule at the 2014 Palmetto Intercollegiate, Sun.-Tue., Oct. 26-28 at Turtle Point Golf Club in Kiawah Island, S.C.
