COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Following a scoreless 90 minutes in regulation, Ashley Herndon scored less than four minutes into overtime to give the James Madison women's soccer team a 1-0 victory over the Maryland Terrapins at Ludwig Field on Thursday night.
Attempting to pass to a teammate, a Maryland (4-3-0) defender turned the ball over in her own half of the field. The ball fell to senior midfielder Rachel Ivey, who took one touch and played the ball to Herndon, who was cutting in from the right side of the box. The junior from Ashburn, Va. then took the shot with her right foot, spinning it past the diving Terrapin goalkeeper to give the Dukes their fourth straight victory to improve to 5-2-0.
Both teams earned several chances in the offensive third in the contest, but neither side could find the back of the net in a scoreless regulation period. Maryland's wingers, who saw the ball often, earned 13 corners compared to none for JMU. The shots were more even, however, with the game ending with a 14-11 margin in favor of the Terps.
Junior midfielder Allie Bunner came close to putting the Dukes ahead in the 87th minute, but her strike from 25 yards out rang off the crossbar.
Rising the Record Boards The goal by Herndon was the 16th of her career, good enough to tie Jon-nell Berry, Chantel Schwandt and Aimee Vaughn for 17th in program history.
Noteworthy Continuing her fantastic night, Herndon's goal gave her at least one point, which can be earned on a goal (2) or an assist (1), in each of the first seven games of the season and in eight straight games dating back to the final game of the 2014 season.
Coach's Quote "It was a very tough game. Maryland is a really good side that kind of took it to us in the first half," said Head Coach David Lombardo. "We made some adjustments in personnel in the second half, played better and got some really good chances."
