BOONE, N.C. – No. 19 James Madison Field Hockey tallied its first shutout victory of the season with a 5-0 win at Appalachian State on Friday afternoon. The win marks No. 150 for Head Coach Christy Morgan's JMU career.
The Dukes, now 5-1, are on a five-game win streak. They have won nine straight against the Mountaineers, beginning Oct. 20, 1983. App State is now 1-6 on the year.
JMU outshot App State 23-3, the third consecutive game the Dukes have held a double-digit shot advantage. Of their 23 shots, 13 JMU attempts were on goal while all three App State attempts were on goal. Today's win marked the second shutout in sophomore goalkeeper Sara Kraeutler's career.
Madison also earned a tally off a penalty stroke for the second straight contest, with senior Loes Stijntjes taking the shot that pushed JMU to a 3-0 lead. She finished the day with two goals, tied for the team lead with redshirt senior Taylor West.
QUOTING COACH MORGAN
"This was a game that we got to explore the depth of our bench and it proved to be very effective," Head Coach Christy Morgan said. "Our leaders, Taylor and Loes, are starting to demand a standard of hockey, and our youth is following. App State is a well-coached team and presented challenges for us to overcome. We have some growing to do, and I'm certain each individual involved with this program is open to the growth needed to be the best that we can be. We will rest up tonight and regroup for practice tomorrow morning in preparation for Sunday's game."
