Second-Half Corner Goals Secure JMU's 3-1 Win over Richmond

HARRISONBURG, Va. – A pair of second-half corner goals secured the 3-1 win by James Madison field hockey against Richmond (6-7, 4-2 A10) on Friday night. The Dukes (10-3, 3-1 CAA) are currently on a four-game win-streak.
Freshman defender Florien Sondern broke a 1-1 tie when she ripped a stop pass from junior midfielder Hannah Hall into the cage at the 41-minute mark. The Dukes pushed their lead to 3-1 in the 62nd minute off junior defender McKenzie Ridgely's first collegiate goal, also off the stick stop by Hall. Sophomore forward Melissa Wilken earned assists on both corners as well.
JMU earned four penalty corner attempts in the second half and ended the game with a 5-4 advantage over Richmond. The Spiders four attempts all came in the first half. The Dukes also finished with a 12-6 shot advantage, including an 8-0 showing over the final 35 minutes.
Sophomore forward Ashley Gippe started the scoring for JMU less than eight minutes into play with a smooth rebound putback. The Spiders took five of the next six shot attempts, getting the fifth to go at the 26-minute mark. Elise Zwicklbauer scored on a high chip shot from the top of the circle while Richmond played a man up.
The Dukes now head to Lafayette for a Sunday afternoon contest on Oct. 16 at 2 p.m.
DEFENDING THE FRONT LINES
Junior defender McKenzie Ridgely scored her first collegiate goal at the 61:53 mark of tonight's game, converting a penalty corner for JMU. It also marked the first points of her collegiate career on just her eighth shot attempt over 25 games (all eight have come this season).
IN THE CORNER
JMU won the corner battle (5-4) for the seventh time this season. The Dukes are 7-0 this season when they earn more corners than their opponent.
HELPING HAND
Junior Hannah Hall now leads the Dukes in assists this season at seven, followed closely by sophomore Melissa Wilken (6). With the pair of helpers, Hall pushed her season point total to 21, her first season over the 20-point threshold.
LEADING THE COMMONWEALTH
Tonight's victory marked the fifth of the season (5-0) for JMU against a team also hailing from the Commonwealth of Virginia. The Dukes will face two more in-state rivals this regular season: William & Mary (Oct. 21) and No. 10 Virginia (Oct. 30)
IN THE SERIES
The Dukes hold an all-time series lead of 38-5-1 over the Spiders. JMU is on a three-game series win-streak and has won eight of the last 10 meetings.
UP NEXT
JMU travels to Lafayette this Sunday for a 2 p.m. game. The Leopards hold the all-time series 1-0.

JMU holds its final homestand of the regular season next weekend at the JMU Field Hockey Complex. The Dukes host William & Mary on Friday, Oct. 21 at 6 p.m. in their Pink Game before closing against No. 7 Louisville in a Purple Out on Sunday, Oct. 23 at noon.
