HARRISONBURG, Va. – No. 17 James Madison field hockey dropped a 4-2 decision to No. 7 Louisville in the final home game of the regular season on Sunday afternoon.
With the Cardinals (15-3, 3-3 ACC) leading 3-1 late in the second half, the Dukes (11-5, 3-2 CAA) pulled junior goalkeeper Sara Kraeutler with just under 10 minutes to play for an additional striker. The strategy paid off as junior Hannah Hall converted her fourth penalty stroke of the season less than a minute later, pulling JMU back to within one with 8:49 to play.
Despite an intense attack game from JMU, the Dukes were only able to put two more shots on the board while Louisville's lone shot attempt over the final 10 minutes found the back of the empty cage. JMU finished the contest with a 13-9 shot advantage while Louisville took the 7-6 edge in shots-on-goal.
The Dukes and Cardinals were tied 1-1 for much of the first half thanks to a game-tying corner deflection from sophomore Ashley Gippe. A late first-half corner goal gave Louisville a 2-1 lead heading into halftime.
JMU has a pair of road games next weekend to close out the 2016 regular season. The Dukes head to Hofstra to close out Colonial Athletic Association action before traveling over the mountain to take on No. 9 Virginia in the regular-season finale.
