SORRENTO, Fla. – The James Madison women's golf team earned the title of co-champions at the Morehead State Citrus Spring Invitational on Tuesday at the Par 72, 6,152-yard RedTail Golf Club.
The Dukes won their first tournament of the season and the first since their 2013 Colonial Athletic Association title after tying Western Kentucky and Elon with 899 total strokes over the 54-hole, three-round event. Western Kentucky received the trophy, however, based on a Golfstat tiebreaker that compares the scores of the fifth golfer on each team.
Leading the way for JMU was sophomore
Laura Gomez-Ruiz (+2, 5th), who carded an even-par 72 to secure her second straight top-five finish. The Malaga, Spain, native turned in yet another strong performance after being named CAA Golfer of the Week two weeks ago following the North Florida Collegiate.
One shot back was sophomore
Maddisen Cox (+3, 6th), who shot a 1-over par 73 in all three rounds this week to finish as one of only 17 golfers, alongside Gomez-Ruiz, to stay single digits over par or better in the field of 118 competitors.
Topping the individual leaderboard was Elon's Kelsey Badmaev (-2, 1st). The junior carder her second 72 of the tournament, but gained her advantage with a round-best 70 in round two to take the lead for good.
Also impressing for the Dukes was freshman
Carley Cox (+11, T-22nd), who's tournament was highlighted by a 1-over par 73 on Monday and carded 77s in the other two rounds. Rounding out James Madison's scoring was freshman
Katie Turk (+23, T77th) and sophomore
Gabrielle Weiss (+32, 105th).
Freshman
Jordan McKelvin also competed as an individual, finishing tied for 57th at 18-over.
UP NEXTJMU will return to the course on Friday, April 1st for the start of the 2016 Rebel Intercollegiate. The tournament is hosted by Ole Miss and held at the Ole Miss Golf Course in Oxford, Miss.
