JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – James Madison sophomoreÂ
Laura Gomez-Ruiz capitalized on a strong performance to finish tied for fifth at the 2016 North Florida Collegiate, hosted by the University of North Florida, on Tuesday at the at the par 72, 6,002-yard Jacksonville Golf and Country club.

Gomez-Ruiz (+3, T-5th) entered the final round leading the 96-player field at 2-under par through 36 holds, but carded a 77 in the third round. She finished the tournament with 219 strokes, just two off the lead pace of 217, which also tied the 2015 tournament record for total strokes.
The Malaga, Spain, native birdied eight holes including three over a four-hole stretch in Monday's first round, and earned par on 37 holes over the course of three rounds.
Also competing for the Dukes were sophomoreÂ
Maddisen Cox (+18, T-54th), freshmanÂ
Katie Turk (+23, T-69th), seniorÂ
Kelsey Solan (+37, 92nd) and redshirt juniorÂ
Rachel Walker (+54, 93rd). Overall, the team finished in 17th.
The University of Houston took home the team title after carding a 293-297-288 - 878 overall. Houston golfers Megan Thothong and Emily Gilbreth tied for first on the individual leaderboard at +1 after moving up four and seven spots, respectively, in the final round.

Carley Cox (+21, T-62nd) enjoyed an excellent third round as she fired a 73 behind the strength of three birdies on the day while playing as an unattached individual. SophomoreÂ
Gabrielle Weiss (+34, T-88nd) also played as an individual in the tournament.
The Dukes return to action on Sunday, March 20 when they travel to Sorrento, Fla., for the Morehead State Spring Citrus Challenge Invitational at the Redtail Golf Club.
