On Thursday night JMU Women's Golf and Men's football teams volunteered during STEM Night at Stone Spring Elementary. They spent their evening helping students build their arcade games by handling the dangerous tools. The women's golf team ran the glue gun station, and the football team ran the cardboard cutting station.
At the end of the night the student-athletes got the chance to play the arcade games the children of Stone Spring Elementary had created.
Junior golfer Maddisen Cox mentioned her favorite part of helping with STEM Night was, "helping them build their arcade games and seeing how excited they got about learning and creating what they envisioned."
Laura Gomez-Ruiz, who is also on the women's golf team said, "it was very satisfying to put a smile on all the kids' faces."
STEM stands for "Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math". The students started by planning out their designs on paper. Then used the resources available to build them.
On Saturday the students got the chance to show off their games at the Valley Mall during the Harrisonburg City Schools STEM Day.
Harrisonburg Education Foundation describes STEM Day as "A celebration of learning in fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Students and teachers working side-by-side to showcase STEM related learning projects and provide an opportunity for people throughout the community to watch demonstrations, participate in hands-on activities and get excited about learning."
