AUBURN, Ala. – Behind Megan Good's one-hit shutout, No. 13/15 James Madison (12-2) topped No. 2 Auburn 1-0 Sunday at Jane B. Moore Field, snapping the Tigers' 13-game win streak.
Good was electric in the circle allowing just one Auburn single and three walks over the outing to improve to 8-0 on the season. The junior struck out 10 batters, including All-American Kasey Cooper twice in Sunday's contest. The shutout was the fifth for Good this season, and the first time the Tigers (14-2) have been kept off the board since April 17, 2015, after suffering a 6-0 loss to No. 6 Alabama.
James Madison tallied four hits in the contests including doubles from Kierstin Roadcap and Niki Prince, extending Prince's hitting streak to eight game. Freshman Cambry Arnold's RBI single in the third inning secure the victory and snapped Auburn pitching staff's streak of 36 consecutive innings without allowing a run.
The Dukes lone run came in the top of third as Roadcap led off with a double down the left field line. Pinch runner Mimi Morris advanced to third off a groundout from Morgan Tolle before scoring off Arnold's single up the middle.
Good retired nine consecutive batters before issuing a walk and held the Tigers hitless until the bottom of the fourth after Haley Fagan's single to shallow right. After a leadoff walk to Courtney Shea, the Tigers moved the tying run to third with two outs in the bottom of the seventh before Good slammed the door with her 10th strikeout.
QUOTING COACH DEAN
"It was two great teams going at it. It was fun to watch. Even as a coach, it was fun to watch. Megan [Good] was unbelievable. She was hitting her spots. The one hit Auburn had was a little bloop over first base. Defensively, we were very calm, which helped because Auburn is a very aggressive offensive team. Do we have things to work on? Yes. Were we better today than we were yesterday? Yes. All of those things are important."
THE UNTOUCHABLE MEGAN GOOD
Megan Good continues to dominate offenses tallying her fifth consecutive outing without allowing a run. The junior has now pitched 32.2 consecutive shutout innings. Over her eight starts, Good has allowed just two runs over 51.0 innings for a 0.27 ERA. She has pitched five shutouts while combing for two more. Allowing just 17 hits and 10 walks, Good has struck out 78 batters and has held opponents to a .100 batting average at the plate.
