No. 10 Dukes Open Conference Play With Sweep of Hofstra

The Dukes took a 7-0 lead over the Pride in the second inning, but Hofstra clawed back within four before JMU notched the 10-4 victory. The Dukes run-ruled the Pride 10-1 in five innings to complete the sweep and open the CAA slate with a 2-0 record. Winning its 11th straight game, JMU improved to 26-3 overall while Hofstra fell to 9-12.
JMU notched 14 extra-base hits, including six homers, to slug at a .915 slugging percentage while six Dukes tallied multiple RBIs over Saturday's games.
Freshman catcher Kierstin Roadcap led the Dukes going 4-for-6 with two homers and three RBIs. Junior infielder Morgan Tolle drove in a team-leading four runs off four hits. Freshman Odicci Alexander notched two home runs in Saturday's opening contest and notched three RBIs over the doubleheader.
Junior Megan Good started both games of Saturday's doubleheader and improved to 18-0 on the season. She pitched seven innings and allowed one hit and one unearned run while striking out seven.
After a scoreless first inning in the series opener, the Dukes broke open the game in the second inning. Freshman second baseman Madison Naujokas got on base with a one-out double to second before Roadcap notched a two-out single to turn over the lineup. Tolle cleared the bases with a single to push the lead to 2-0.
Freshman left fielder Cambry Arnold push the lead to 3-0 for the Dukes with an RBI single. After Good got on board with a single, senior right fielder Taylor Newton cleared the bases with a double. Alexander capped the seven-run inning with a home run.
Alexander took over in the circle in the bottom of the third inning. After pitching a perfect frame, Hofstra loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth and used a sacrifice fly to cut JMU's lead to 7-1. The freshman right-hander pushed the lead back up to seven in the top of the fifth with a leadoff home run, her second homer of the contest.
The Pride used four hits, including three doubles, in the bottom of the fifth to cut JMU's lead down to 8-4. The Dukes used back-to-back home runs from sophomore infielder Paige Mitchell, the first of her career, and Roadcap in the top of the seventh to tally a 10-4 lead.
Redshirt sophomore Jessica McCabe and Good combined for a scoreless sixth and seventh inning to hold off the Pride's comeback attempt.
Hofstra notched the first run of the game in the second game of Saturday's slate. After a one-out single, a sacrifice bunt and two JMU errors allowed the run to cross to give the Pride a 1-0 lead after two innings.
Mitchell led off the top of the third with a walk before Roadcap homered for the second consecutive game to put JMU on top with a 2-1 lead. Newton led off the top of the fourth with an inside the park home run before four JMU doubles in the inning plated three runs to push the lead to 6-1.
In the top of the fifth, the Dukes plated four runs on two outs to push their lead to 10-1. After Newton knocked a double to left, senior infielder Madyson Moran opened the two-out scoring with a single. A single from Mitchell and triple from Naujokas plated two runs before Tolle plated the final run of the game with a RBI single to left field.
NEWTON NEARS RECORD MARK
Taylor Newton's big day at the plate has the senior inching closer to JMU career records. With three RBIs over Saturday's slate, Newton now has 152 for her career, just three shy from tying Jailyn Ford's program record of 155. Newton also ranks fourth in career home runs with 29 and eighth in career hits with 186.
GOOD HITS THE CENTURY MARK
Megan Good's RBI single in the series opener against the Pride carried the junior to a career milestone as she notched her 100th career RBI. Good becomes the sixth Duke in program history to ever hit the mark.
BOMBS AWAY
In the series opener, the Dukes launched four home runs to notch a 10-4 victory over the Pride as Odicci Alexander (2), Paige Mitchell and Kierstin Roadcap each homered in the contest. It's the first time since the 2016 season that the Dukes have homered four times in the game. The last time came in a 10-6 victory over BYU on March 5, 2016.

DOMINATING THE LANDSCAPE
James Madison and the Pride have dominated the Colonial Athletic Association Field over the last decade. The two programs have capture the CAA tile in 13 of the last 14 seasons.

The Dukes look to complete the series sweep on Sunday, March 26. First pitch in Sunday's series finale against the Pride is scheduled for noon.
