HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Four unearned runs in the third inning proved too much for No. 10 James Madison to overcome as the Dukes stumbled to Hofstra 5-2 in Sunday's series finale inside Bill Edwards Stadium.
The loss snapped JMU's 11-game win streak as the Dukes fell to 26-3 overall and 2-1 in Colonial Athletic Association play. The Pride improved to 10-12 overall and 1-2 in league action.
Sophomore shortstop Paige Mitchell led the Dukes at the plate going 2-for-3 with a double. Junior pitcher Megan Good went 1-for-3 with a home run while junior infielder Morgan Tolle went 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI.
Good was tagged with her first loss of the season as the right-hander fell to 18-1 on the season. She dealt 5.0 innings allowing six hits and five runs. Only one of the Pride's five runs was earned. Good issued two walks and struck out nine in the contest. Redshirt sophomore Jessica McCabe tossed the final inning allowing one hit and one walk while striking out one.
The Dukes jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first after Good knocked a solo home run to help her own cause, but the Pride answered in the bottom of the first with a solo homer of its own to lock the game up at 1-1.
After getting freshmen second baseman Madison Naujokas and catcher Kierstin Roadcap on with a hit by pitch and walk, respectively, a double from Tolle allowed Naujokas to score to put the Dukes back on top 2-1.
Defensive struggles plagued the Dukes in the bottom of the third. Hofstra loaded the bases with no outs after a JMU error, hit by pitch and a bunt single. A second passed ball of the inning allowed a Pride run to score to lock the game up at 2-2. Two additional JMU errors allowed two Hofstra runs to score to give the Pride a 5-2 advantage.
The Pride's Sarah Cornell kept the Dukes off-balanced at the plate as she allowed just four hits and one walk while striking out three to preserve Hofstra's 5-2 lead to notch her ninth victory of the season.
