On Sunday February 18th, James Madison Athletics celebrated the 2018 National Girls and Women in Sports Day by hosting a two-hour clinic in Sinclair Gymnasium at Godwin Hall. Afterwards the girls attended the women's basketball game at the Convocation Center against UNCW.
Â
The morning started off at 11 a.m. with two guest speakers who shared why playing sports is important to them. Track and field redshirt senior De'ana Forbes explained that she believes that sports have added value to her life because she has developed close, tight-knit relationships. Forbes said of early sports participation, "You learn a lot about health, how to be healthy and how to live a healthy lifestyle."
Â
The second guest speaker was field hockey coach Christy Morgan, who also believes in the relationships built within athletics. She said, "One thing you learn in sports is to create a bond, to create a connection, loyalty, to be a part of something bigger than yourself."
Â
Morgan also wanted to let the young women know about the possibilities that sports can open as she has played on a national team, in the Olympics and has had the opportunity to coach wonderful women who give back everyday. After learning about the connections than can be created in sports, the girls did a drill in small groups where they had to create a connection with one another in order to stay in a close line to help bring the idea to life.
Â
The girls were then broken up into three different groups - J, M, and U - where they went to different stations for 30 minutes each. The stations included field hockey, tennis and track and field. The girls got to try different aspects of each of these sports. When one participant was asked her favorite part of the day she said field hockey because she learned that it all takes teamwork and that you have to be able to connect with your friends to play.
Â
It was most of the athletes' second or third years assisting at National Girls & Women in Sports Day. They said that they loved seeing the girls participate in sports so much that they wanted to come back in any way that they could. When asked what it means to them to be a role model as a woman active in sports, the student-athletes indicated that they know the positives that sports bring to their lives, such as higher self esteem and a healthy life, and they want to be able to share that with younger girls. They agreed that they would love to be the reason that a young girl chooses to become active in sports.
Â
To conclude the event, two student-athletes from field hockey spoke to the group. Freshman Pheobe Large told the girls, "Playing sports and getting out of your comfort zone helps to make great friends."
Â
Redshirt sophomore Megan Guzzardi wanted to leave the girls with why sports have left a significant impact on her life and why they should choose to participate in sports as well by saying, "Field hockey gave me the opportunity to have self confidence. It is important to go out as young women and try hard things as it creates confidence."
Â
After listening to the final speakers, the girls were encouraged to go with their families to the JMU women's basketball game at the Convocation Center, where they watched the Dukes win over UNCW 65-48.
