QUICK HITS
- James Madison men's basketball heads north for the weekend, traveling to Fairfax, Va. to renew the second-longest rivalry in program history with a 7 p.m. matchup at fellow Commonwealth foe George Mason on Saturday, Nov. 16.
- Earlier this week, JMU's five freshmen combined to score 61 points to power the Dukes to a 96-48 victory over Shenandoah at the Convo. Freshman forward Michael Christmas led the way, stuffing the stat sheet with 19 points, 15 rebounds, four assists, four blocks and three steals--all career highs in his first-ever double-double.
- The Dukes took a step forward in 2018-19, going 14-19 on the year, including a 6-12 mark in Colonial Athletic Association play while losing just two seniors to graduation.
- Despite the graduation of departed guard Stuckey Mosley, the Dukes reuturn three other players who averaged double-digit scoring last season in Lewis (16.4ppg) and Darius Banks (12.3) and junior forward Dwight Wilson (10.2), who also pulled down 7.8 rebounds per contest in a breakout sophomore season.
- Prior to the season, both Lewis and Banks were named to Preseason All-CAA teams, with Lewis earning a spot on the All-CAA First Team and Banks being tabbed to the Second Team heading into 2019-20.
- The Dukes were tabbed to finish fourth in the preseason poll of the league's coaches and media members, earning three first-place votes along the way in one of the closest preseason polls in league history.
- Heading into the season, JMU welcomed a six-member freshman class, including forward Michael Christmas, Dalton Jefferson and Julien Wooden, as well as guards Zyon Dobbs, Jayvis Harvey and Quinn Richey.
- George Mason has opened the season with three consecutive wins as part of a five-game home stant to kick off 2019-20. The Patriots picked up an 80-74 win over LIU on Wednesday to move to 3-0.
- Sophomore guard Jordan Miller leads the Patriots in scoring through their opening games, averaging 14.0 points per contest, while junior guard Javon Greene is averaging 13.7 points and 6.3 boars for Mason.
- The Dukes and Patriots have aced each other 94 times since JMU made men's basketball a varsity sport for the 1969-70 season, with the two schools splitting the all-time series exactly at 47-47 to make the Patriots JMU's second-longest rivalry (W&M, 98 games).
- Mason has controlled the series recently, winning the last three matchups with JMU winning just two contests since the 2005-06 campaign. JMU has not won a game in Fairfax since a 57-52 win on Feb. 22, 2003.
- In last year's matchup at Mason, the Dukes held the Patriots to just 38.3% shooting, but committed 16 turnovers in a 66-53 defeat. Then-junior Matt Lewis racked up 18 points, eight boards and three assists on the evening.
