AUSTIN, TX. – A stellar season came to an end as junior
Bonnie Zhang closed out her 2019 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championship journey with a 30th-place finish in the 100 freestyle prelims on Saturday morning.
Â
With a seed time of 48.38 from UNC's Last Chance Meet, Zhang finished third in the fifth heat with a time of 48.92. The top finish went to Louisville's Mallory Comerford with a 46.67 mark.
Â
"I am so proud of Bonnie and her accomplishments this season, concluding with her performance at NCAAs," Head Coach
Dane Pedersen said. "Just making this meet is a massive accomplishment and Bonnie represented JMU, the athletic department and her swimming and diving family excellently. While we are happy with her swims, she knows she can be back at this meet and do better which is powerful motivation next season. I can't wait to see what the future holds, not only for Bonnie but for our program as a whole."
Â
Throughout the course of the meet, Zhang earned 29th in 200 freestyle and 42nd in the 50 freestyle. She was only the third swimmer and fifth overall student-athlete in program history to compete at the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships.Â
"Making NCAAs means a lot to me and racing against some of the world's best swimmers has been an unbelievable experience," Zhang said. "The racing atmosphere this week has shown me why I swim and has made me even more excited for next season. This year has been a roller coaster, full of ups and downs, but I will remember the journey with my teammates and their endless support – I couldn't get through each practice every day without them."Â
In her junior campaign, the Australia native garnered 12 individual first-place finishes and 15 relay wins while breaking three school records (50, 100 and 200 freestyle). Zhang was named the Colonial Athletic Association Swimmer of the Meet after securing five gold medals from two individual events and three relays.
