ELON, N.C. – James Madison volleyball fell to Elon on Sunday in three sets (20-25, 22-25, 25-27), splitting its weekend series with the Phoenix after winning Saturday's opener.
JMU fell to 10-4 overall and 4-2 in Colonial Athletic Association play, while Elon reclaimed first place in the league, improving to 11-7 overall and 6-2 in the CAA.
Sophomore
Miëtte Veldman had 16 total kills on a .308 hitting percentage, including eight kills in the third set alone. Junior
Caroline Dozier added 26 assists and went 4-0-6 (.667) in attacking. Senior
Savannah Marshall led the Dukes on defense with 18 digs.

This is JMU's first three-set match since falling to then No. 4 Ohio State on Sept. 10.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
The Dukes took an early 13-7 advantage, but the Phoenix turned around the set, outscoring James Madison 18-7 the rest of the way to win 25-20. Outside hitters Leah Daniel and Kellyn Trowse combined for 13 Elon kills during the set.
Second Set
Elon continued its momentum from the first set, springing to a 19-10 advantage. JMU fought back, closing to 21-23 with three separate 3-0 runs. However, Elon clinched the set on its second set point, winning 25-22 and gaining a 2-0 match advantage.
Third Set
James Madison trailed 11-6 early on, but that deficit was quickly erased by Veldman, who killed off three straight points to tie the score at 12. Still tied at 18, JMU went on a 4-0 run to gain a 22-18 lead, but Elon responded with three straight points of their own to cut the lead to 22-21. The Phoenix avoided set point, and took four of the last five points to clinch the match with a 27-25 set three victory.

The Dukes return home for two weekend matches against William & Mary on Oct. 16 and 17. Both matches begin at 3 p.m. ET, and Saturday's match will be streamed on FloSports.
