HARRISONBURG, Va. - The James Madison University Athletics Diversity and Inclusion Council has announced a book drive to promote literacy, diversity and inclusion in local kindergarten and pre-k students as part of a joint effort with Harrisonburg City Public Schools.
Â
The goal of the book drive, which begins immediately and will run through April 30, is to collect at least 1,000 books, enough to deliver at least one to each pre-k and kindergarten student in Harrisonburg City Public Schools. HCPS is one of the most diverse school districts in the Commonwealth of Virginia, comprised of a wide range of students from a myriad of nationalities, ethnicities, cultures and backgrounds.

Â
With the help of HCPS officials, three books have been selected for the opening of the book drive: "That's My Friend" by Vad and Khayla Lee, "A Paintbrush for Paco" by Tracey Kyle and "Saffron Ice Cream" by Rashin Kheiriyeh. All three titles tell diverse stories of families and the importance of unity and understanding.
Â
All books will be shipped to the JMU Athletics Department and delivered to local schools by the student-athletes themselves.
