QUICK HITS
- James Madison will cap its weekend on the road with a trip to Elon on Monday to face the Phoenix at 4 p.m., as the Dukes look to build upon one of its most successful starts in program history. JMU has started 11-3 for the first time since 2010-11.
- On Saturday, the Dukes made history in a 95-91 overtime win at William & Mary, overcoming a 23-point first half deficit that marked the largest comeback win on record at JMU.
- JMU is playing its fourth true road game of the season after seeing five previous road contests cancelled or postponed. The Dukes are 3-0 on the road for the first time since the 1981-82 season, when they started 4-0 before falling at No. 3 Virginia.
- James Madison ranks 20th in the nation and first in the league with a 48.4% field goal percentage so far this season. Among players with at least 50 field goal attempts, three Dukes - graduate transfer Alonzo Sule (.682), redshirt freshman Justin Amadi (.639), redshirt freshman Terell Strickland (.561) - are all shooting at least 50% from the field. Sule's current percentage ranks second all-time in JMU history and would be fifth-highest in the country.
- The Dukes ripped 16 more steals at William & Mary, lifting their season total to 147, which is tied for 24th in the country. JMU's 10.5 steals per game ranks seventh in Division I and the Dukes have at least 10 steals in eight games this season.
- JMU is forcing 18.21 turnovers per game thus far in 2021-22, eighth-most in the country, after forcing 25 on Saturday evening in Williamsburg, the most the Dukes have forced against a Division I team since a win over South Carolina State on Dec. 29, 2007.
SCOUTING THE PHOENIX
- Since opening the league schedule with a resounding win over Northeastern, Elon has dropped three in a row, including a 59-54 loss to Towson on Saturday evening, to fall to 4-13 (1-3) on the season.
- Sophomore guard Darius Burford currently leads Elon with 12.4 points per game, upping that average to 16.8ppg since the start of league play, while junior guard Hunter McIntosh sits just behind at 11.7 points per contest.
- The Phoenix shoot well from range, hitting 9.4 three-pointers per game, inside the top 50 nationally and second-most in the league.
SERIES HISTORY
- Monday will mark the 18th meeting between the two teams, with all but one coming since the Phoenix joined the league in 2014-15.
- The Dukes controlled the series early, but Elon used a five-game winning streak over JMU, as well as an upset win in last season's conference tournament to cut the Dukes' edge to 9-8 heading into Monday, though the Dukes hold a winning record on both home courts.
- Last season, JMU swept both regular season contests against the Phoenix before Elon hit 13 three-pointers in the quarterfinals of last spring's conference tournament, erasing a 15-point second-half deficit to pick up a 72-71 win.
