THE DUKES

James Madison welcomes Old Dominion to the Atlantic Union Bank Center for the final contest of 2022 on Dec. 31. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. and will stream on ESPN+. The game will serve as the first-ever meeting as part of the TowneBank Royal Rivalry Challenge for each team.
JMU is coming off its first-ever win as a member of the Sun Belt Conference with a 77-56 victory over Coastal Carolina on Dec. 29. The Dukes held the Chanticleers to 21-of-67 (31.3%) from the field, CCU's second-worst shooting performance of the season.
Senior guard Kiki Jefferson was dominant, leading all players in points (20), rebounds (10), and assists (eight). For Jefferson, this marked her fourth double-double of the season and 15th in her career. Additionally, her eight dimes set a career high.
Junior Jamia Hazell knocked down six shots for a season-high 14 points, while graduate student Caroline Germond and junior Kseniia Kozlova chipped in with 10 apiece. Classmate Claire Neff recorded a career-high five blocks, tied for the second-most among all Sun Belt players this season.
James Madison ranks in the top 20 nationally in four categories: rebound margin (11th - +11.8), field goal percentage defense (12th - 34.1%), defensive rebounds per game (18th - 30.8), and rebounds per game (T-20th - 44.0).
Individually, Jefferson is tied for 35th in the NCAA in total points (239) and tied for 37th in points per game (18.4). Additionally, junior Peyton McDaniel is 12th in the country in three-point percentage at 49.2, knocking down 31-of-63 from deep.
At 11-2, the Dukes are off to their best start since 2019-20. A win on Saturday would equal JMU's 12-2 opening in the 2018-19 campaign. Moreover, a victory would give James Madison a perfect 8-0 record in December. The last time the Dukes went perfect in a month was December 2019 when they went 4-0.
JMU is riding an eight-game winning streak, making it one of 12 teams in the nation with a streak of eight or more wins. South Carolina has won 19 consecutive games stretching back to last season.

SCOUTING THE MONARCHS

Old Dominion owns an 8-6 record and has fallen in its last three outings. The Monarchs dropped its Sun Belt opener at App State, 81-55, on Dec. 29
ODU boasts one of the top defenses in the country, forcing 21.64 turnovers and recording 10.9 steals per game.

SERIES HISTORY

JMU trails the all-time series against Old Dominion at 25-53 but has won eight of the last 10 meetings.
Last time these teams met, Precious Hall scored 23 points to lead the Dukes over the Monarchs, 77-61, on March 1, 2013.
