HARRISONBURG, Va. –
Peyton McDaniel registered a season-high 17 points and a career-best 14 rebounds to lead James Madison past East Carolina, 57-51, in non-conference women's basketball action on Sunday afternoon inside the Atlantic Union Bank Center.
JMU (3-0) held ECU (1-1) to 17-of-61 (.279) from the field and out-rebounded the Pirates 46-35. The Dukes are 3-0 to begin the season for the first time since the 2018-19 campaign.
McDaniel's double-double performance was her first of the season and ninth in her career, while playing a career-high 37 minutes.
Annalicia Goodman scored 11 points off the bench on a perfect 4-for-4 shooting day.
Kseniia Kozlova finished in double figures with 10 points to go along with eight rebounds. The center also tied her career high in steals with three.
Ro Scott knocked down a pair of three-pointers for eight points.
For East Carolina, Amiya Joyner recorded a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds, while Jayla Hearp scored a team-best 15 points. Jade Tillman chipped in with seven points and two blocks.
How It Happened
First Quarter – JMU 17, East Carolina 12
- James Madison jumped to an early 6-0 lead, fueled by back-to-back buckets from McDaniel and a fast break layup from Kozlova off an East Carolina turnover.
- JMU built a 14-3 lead, but the Pirates closed on a 9-3 run in the final 2:41 to cut the deficit to five (17-12).
Second Quarter – JMU 29, East Carolina 24
- ECU opened the quarter with two consecutive three-pointers, taking its first lead of the game (18-17), but McDaniel answered with a three off another Pirate turnover to regain the lead for JMU.
- The Dukes ended the quarter on a 6-0 run, extending their lead by five points heading into the half.
Third Quarter – JMU 45, East Carolina 37
- JMU received 11 points from its bench, led by Scott with five.
- The Dukes out-scored the pirates in the paint (6-0).
Fourth Quarter – JMU 57, East Carolina 51
- JMU maintained a 10-point lead (49-39) with 7:10 left, but ECU rallied quickly to make it a five-point game (51-46) at the 5:30 mark.
- Both teams were scoreless for nearly four minutes, however the Jamia Hazell and Kozlova earned trips to line, going a combined 4-for-4 to secure the win.

- James Madison leads East Carolina 30-26 in the all-time series dating 1973, and has defeated the Pirates in four consecutive contests.
- The last time JMU held opponents to under 60 points in three straight games was Feb. 9-Feb. 16, 2023, against Louisiana (W, 65-59), Arkansas State (W, 70-57) and Texas State (W, 58-54).
- JMU held an advantage over ECU in points in the paint (26-18), bench points (23-14) and second-chance points (12-7).
- With 46 rebounds, the Dukes now have three straight games with 40-plus rebounds.
