CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The James Madison swimmers closed out their weekend in the Queen City by finishing out the Fall Frenzy Invitational on Sunday night at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center.
The Dukes had a top-three finish in the A final of five different individual events and had a top-three finish in one relay.

"We use this meet as a halfway report card to see where we are and gauge the effects our training has had up to this part. The team did a fabulous job this weekend racing tough, unrested and most of all, applying the aspects that are specific to their races. We are super excited about the second half of our season as we focus to peal at our Sun Belt Championships and perform our best."
Day One
- The team of Grace Bousum, Madison Wimmer, Alex Volk and Jamie Cornwell took third place in the 200 Free Night to kick off the first day of finals with a time of 1:35.72.
- Five Dukes competed in the finals of the 500 Free, with Angela Ritchie taking second in the A final with a time of 4:55.09. Abby Maguire took the top time in the B final with a time of 4:57.92 while Maddy Coombs swam 5:00.82 to take fourth and Riley Nugent finished seventh with a time of 5:02.38. In the C final, Sarah Pauley finished seventh with a time of 5:08.70.
- In the 200 IM finals, six Dukes competed as Jess Pryne took third with a time of 2:02.25 in the A final. Bousum finished the B final in seventh with a time of 2:04.44. A pair of Dukes competed in the C and D finals each, as Suzanne Earnshaw (fourth; 2:06.14) and Ann Chappell Ellington (sixth; 2:07.03) were in C final and Wimmer (first; 2:06.35) and Alli Straub (fourth; 2:07.25) were in the D final.
- Cornwell swam a time of 23.07 in the 50 Free A Final to place third and was joined by Volk who took the top time in the C final (23.53).
- To end the first evening, Pauley, Earnshaw, Bousum and Cornwell combined to swim a time of 3:46.37 in the 400 Medley Relay to finish seventh.
Day Two
- To start the finals portion of day two, Ann Chappell Ellington took the second-best time in the D final of the 100 Fly with a time of 57.02.
- Claiming the top time in the 400 IM prelims at 4:22.03, Jess Pryne finished fourth in the A final of the event with a time of 4:20.97. Joining her in the A final was Maddy Coombs, who placed sixth with a time of 4:25.79. Riley Nugent competed in the C final, swimming a time of 4:31.91 to take third in the heat.
- In the A final of the 200 Free, Grace Bousum swam a time of 1:49.18 to finish third. Angela Ritchie and Abby Maguire both finished out the B final, finishing second (1:51.87) and eighth (1:53.10), respectively. Jamie Cornwell took the top time in the C final with a time of 1:51.07.
- Two Dukes competed in the finals of the 100 Breast, with Suzanne Earnshaw finishing seventh in the C final with a time of 1:05.52 while Riley Bridgman swam a time of 1:05.42 to place second in the D final.
- For the final individual event of the night, six Dukes competed in the finals of the 100 Back. Sarah Pauley was the top Duke, placing fourth in the B final with a time of 57.17. In the C final, Suzanne Earnshaw finished third behind a time of 57.24. A Duke was in the second to fifth spots in the D final in the order of Maddie Lehman (57.38), Madison Wimmer (57.65), Alli Straub (57.90) and Ann Chappell Ellington (58.02).
- Pauley, Earnshaw, Bousum and Cornwell finished out the night as the top JMU squad in the 200 Medley Relay, finishing ninth with a time of 1:43.56.
Day Three
- The 1650 Free began the final day of the Fall Frenzy Invitational, with five Dukes competing. Katelyn Fitzgerald was the top finisher for JMU with a fourth-place finish behind a time of 16:59.88. Abby Maguire (sixth; 17:11.29) and Madison Wimmer (ninth; 17:15.93) had top-10 finishes. Angela Ritchie finished 12th and Sarah Pauley 18th with times of 17:27.44 and 17:35.44, respectively.
- In the A final of the 200 Back, Jess Pryne finished seventh (2:01.66) with Riley Nugent behind her in eighth (2:02.59). Suzanne Earnshaw (2:04.99), Alli Straub (2:05.03) and Pauley (2:08.42) all finished out the C final in respectively fourth, fifth and seventh.
- Jamie Cornwell swam 50.21 in the 100 Free to finish third in the A final. Grace Bousum and Alex Volk took the top two times in the C final, as Bousum swam a time of 50.83 and Volk recorded a 51.41. Wimmer then swam the top time of 51.58 in the D heat and Maddie Lehman joined her in the heat in seventh with a time of 52.65.
- The 200 Breast saw a pair of Dukes swimming in the C final, with Pryne finishing third (2:21.06) and Ann Chappell Ellington fourth (2:22.28). Abby Zindler swam in the D final and finished sixth with a time of 2:26.57.
- Wrapping up the final individual event of the weekend, Maddy Coombs swam the best time in the B final of the 200 Fly at 2:03.31. Maguire also swam the top time of her heat, swimming a time of 2:05.03 in the C final. Closing out the event was Zoey Lusk who swam a time of 2:11.03 to take sixth in the D final.
- In the final event of the night, the top JMU team in the 400 Free Relay placed fourth with a time of 3:22.79. The squad consisted of Wimmer, Volk, Bousum and Cornwell.
Up Next
The swimmers take the rest of the calendar year off and return to the pool on Friday, Jan. 17, 2025 as they host Villanova in a dual meet inside Savage Natatorium. The diving portion will begin at 10 a.m. with swimming to follow at noon.
