LAS VEGAS – James Madison's Academic Advisor Makayla Nichols was named the recipient of the Kenneth O. Miles Professional Promise Award for Region II at the National Association of Academic and Student-Athlete Development Professionals (N4A) Convention in Las Vegas, Nev. on June 9-12.
Â
According to N4A, the award honors "new" professionals who serve student-athletes and have dedicated their energy to the Association and its mission. The award was renamed after Miles, the 2016-17 N4A President, a transformational leader who had a passion for mentoring young professionals and an innate ability to connect with others.
Â
Nichols recently completed her first season working with the football and women's golf programs at JMU. She received a bachelor's in business management from the University of Mount Olive before earning her master's from South Carolina in sport and entertainment management.
Â
"What a well-deserved recognition for Makayla to receive this award from her peers in N4A," said James Madison Senior Associate A.D. Jennifer Phillips. "We knew from the first phone call with Makayla that there is something special about her and I feel fortunate to have her as a member of our SAS team. Makayla is dedicated to supporting her student athletes which allows them to succeed in all facets of their lives."
Â
It is the second time a recipient has represented JMU, as Alise Svihla won the award for Region II in 2011. The award is presented annually to five separate regions.
