BOSTON – Mark Freeman was named a finalist for the 2024-25 Lou Henson National Player of the Year Award, CollegeInsider.com announced on Thursday.
The Lou Henson Player of the Year Award is given annually to the best mid-major player in Division I college basketball. Freeman's recognition comes a day after being named one of 30 finalists for the 2024-25 Riley Wallace Award, given to the most impactful transfer player in DI.
Freeman finished his lone season at JMU averaging 15.8 points and 3.2 assists per game on his way to a First Team All-Sun Belt selection and Sun Belt Newcomer of the Year.
The Memphis, Tenn., native was the only player in the conference with three 30-point games, which all came against league foes. He concluded his JMU career with a 34-point performance against Troy in the Sun Belt semifinals, which tied his career high and tied for the second-highest point total for a Dukes player in a postseason game.
The Lou Henson Award honors the former Illinois and New Mexico State head coach who won 775 games in 41 seasons. The recipient of the annual award is determined by a 10-member voting committee, which consists of current and former head coaches, as well as two senior staff members of collegeinsider.com.
The 2025 award will be announced in San Antonio, Texas, the site of the men's Division I Basketball Championship.
