DURHAM, N.C. – James Madison field hockey suffered a 5-1 setback to the ninth-ranked Duke Blue Devils on Friday evening at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium.

Duke (3-2) did not allow a JMU (0-4) shot until the fourth quarter, outshooting the Dukes 16-4 overall with a 7-1 advantage in penalty corners.

Avery Ruckman was the lone scorer for the Dukes, netting her first goal of the season with an assist from Elena Giangaspero. Lilly Sweeney finished with five saves, while Puck Jansen made the first defensive save of her career.

For the Blue Devils, Kyle Massey scored two goals off the bench, with Shae Wozniak, Ashley Stockdale, and Callie Rogers also finding the back of the net. Goalkeeper Kaiya Chepow picked up the win without facing a shot, while Alessia Cicuto logged 20:04 of action, making two saves and allowing one goal.

James Madison will remain on the road with a Sunday afternoon test at No. 11 Virginia. Game time in Charlottesville is slated for 1 p.m. and will stream on ACC Network Extra.

How It Happened

Off a reset, Julia Boehringer sent a hard pass towards the goal that was deflected in by Wozniak with 0:41 remaining in the first.
In the second frame, Massey redirected a shot from Stockdale at the 9:17 mark to give Duke a 2-0 advantage.
A few minutes later, after an initial defensive save by Jansen, Stockdale collected the rebound and found the back of the net to make it a 3-0 game at the intermission.
Following a blocked shot by Jansen, Massey sent a backhand strike to the top right for a 4-0 Blue Devils lead.
Less than two minutes into the fourth, Drexler-Amey sent a hard shot off the pads of Cicuto and found the stick of Giangaspero, who fired a shot that was redirected by Ruckman.
With under a minute remaining, Rogers drove into the middle of the circle and sent a shot to the high left corner for Duke's fifth and final goal of the game.

Game Notes

Ruckman is the Dukes' third goal scorer of the season, joining Brynna Hill and Jansen.
Sweeney has made 19 saves over the last three games.
Four consecutive losses are the most by JMU since dropping four straight from Oct. 8 through Oct. 24, 2024.
