HARRISONBURG, Va. – In the 79th minute of a highly competitive, gritty match, Carlos Cámara Tur's one-time header proved to be the difference as James Madison men's soccer (3-4, 1-0 Sun Belt) outlasted UCF (4-2-1, 0-1 Sun Belt), 1-0, at Sentara Park on Friday evening.

Despite being outshot 15-10, the Dukes held strong on the backline while remaining opportunistic offensively. After generating several close chances, JMU broke through when Chris Niblock set the table for Cámara Tur, who headed home the game-winner at the back post.

JMU and UCF were even in shots on goal, with each side registering six. In goal, Erik Jaspers made six saves and collected his third shutout of the season and fifth of his career.

Quoting Head Coach Paul Zazenski

"Tonight was a big time result for our group against a very good UCF team," said Zazenski. "We stepped up and scored a huge goal in a perfect moment. It was also great to see us keep a shutout against a historically good offensive team. It's great to start out Sun Belt play with a win. Very proud of our efforts tonight!"

How It Happened

Late in the first half, UCF pressured the Dukes' backline, putting a dangerous shot toward goal in the 40th minute. Jaspers came through for JMU, making his third save of the half to keep the match scoreless.
In the 64th minute, Manuel Lolas rocketed a shot toward the net, but UCF's Matisse Herbert was there to make the stop, keeping the match scoreless.
JMU found the elusive game-winning goal in the 79th minute. Niblock delivered a ball into the box with his right foot, finding Cámara Tur for a header that gave the Dukes a 1-0 lead they would not relinquish.
The Dukes battened down the hatches defensively in the late stages of the match, with Jaspers coming away with one final critical save on Drew Hansen's shot in the 83rd minute.

Game Notes

With the win over UCF, James Madison opened Sun Belt play 1-0 for the first time since 2024, when the Dukes defeated UCF, 2-0, at Sentara Park.
Cámara Tur scored in his second straight match, giving the third-year forward six points on the season. A goal in JMU's next match would make the Valencia, Spain, native the first Duke to score in three consecutive matches since 2023.
Niblock posted his third assist of the season and first since recording a pair in JMU's 2-0 win over Gardner-Webb. The third-year midfielder is now tied for second in the Sun Belt in assists.
Jaspers' third shutout of the season moves him into a tie for second most in the conference in 2026. Additionally, the fourth-year netminder now holds a .800 save percentage, making him one of only two Sun Belt goalkeepers with a save percentage of .800 or better.
