Duffield is in his first season as Character Coach with the James Madison men's basketball team.Â
Prior to coming to Harrisonburg, he spent one year as an intern in the JMU sports media relations department (1999-2000) before serving 25 years on staff with Cru and Athletes in Action at Marshall University, North Carolina State University, and most recently at Morehead State University.
While at Morehead State, he served as a volunteer Character Coach for the football (2017-2024) and basketball teams (2017-2025). He joined with Nations of Coaches as a full-time Character Coach in 2025. His role as Character Coach is serving, connecting with, and equipping coaches and players to pursue a higher level of play through character, leadership, and spiritual development.
A native of Sutton, W.Va., Duffield graduated from Marshall University (’99) with a degree in Sports Management & Marketing. He also holds a certificate in Sports Culture and Leadership from Baylor University’s Faith & Sports Institute.
He and his wife, Becky, who currently serves with Athletes in Action at JMU, have a son, Sawyer, and a daughter, Millie.
