PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 14, 2005 — Drexel's Aleka Yiantsos (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern) scored on a penalty kick in the first half and goalkeeper Kaitlin Bond (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) made 11 saves in recording her record-setting sixth shutout of the season as the Dragons stunned James Madison 2-0 in Colonial Athletic Association women's soccer Friday night.
It was the seventh win of the season for the Dragons (7-6-1, 2-4-0 CAA), eclipsing the previous school record of six set during the 2001 season. Â The Dukes, who entered the week fourth in the Mid-Atlantic region, fell to 9-5 overall and 4-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association.
Drexel got on the board in the 33rd minute when Yiantsos broke into the box past a James Madison defender and was fouled. Â She was awarded a penalty kick and put the ball in the lower left corner past JMU senior goalkeeper Jessica Hussey (Kanata, Ontario/Holy Trinity) to give the Dragons a 1-0 lead. Â
Drexel took that lead to the break despite being out-shot 10-3in the first 45 minutes. Â Bond made six of her saves in the first half.
The score stayed the same late into the game. Â James Madison had its chances but Bond kept the Dukes off of the board. Â In the 83rd minute, Drexel added an insurance goal when freshman Lauren Steins (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Township) lofted a shot from approximately 35 yards out into the far corner, just over the outstretched arms of Hussey.
Bond's sixth career shutout tied her with former Dragon Joy Banares for the most career shutouts in Drexel history. Â Bond has recorded those shutouts in just 14 games.
James Madison out-shot the Dragons 18-7. Â Drexel had five corner kicks to four by the Dukes. Â Hussey made three saves for James Madison.
The Dragons return to the field on Sunday when they host Virginia Commonwealth in a CAA contest. Â Kick off is set for 1 p.m. Â JMU will play at Delaware on Sunday.
