HARRISONBURG, Va., Oct. 16, 2005 — Junior Kurt Morsink (San Jose, Costa Rica/IMG) had two goals and a assist to lead James Madison to a 5-1 victory over Delaware Sunday afternoon in Colonial Athletic Association men's soccer at the JMU Soccer Complex.
Morsink scored his first goal in the 23rd minute of the first half to put the Dukes up 1-0. Red-shirt junior Mike Tuddenham (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill) threw the ball into senior Danny Sheridan (Washington, D.C./Gonzaga) who flicked it to Morsink. Morsink then made a move to his left to get past the defender, and kicked the ball towards the far post for the score.
Twelve minutes later junior Jon Britton (Alpharetta, Ga./Pendleton, Fla., H.S.) added another goal for the Dukes which would prove to be the game-winner. Delaware freshman goalkeeper Taylor Thames (Olney, Md./Georgetown Prep) blocked a shot by Kurt Morsink, but Britton got the rebound and put it in from three yards away. The goal gave the Dukes a 2-0 lead going into halftime.
Delaware came out fighting in the second half. Just seven minutes into the half, Delaware forward Matt Laudeman (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) scored from six yards out, which made the score 2-1 and brought the Blue Hens within one. Delaware freshman Eric Shadoff (Woodstock, Md./Mount Hebron) passed the ball to Laudeman from midfield, and JMU's Tuddenham and goalkeeper Kevin Trapp (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) both went for the ball and collided with each other, leaving an open net for Lauduman to kick the ball into. It was Laudeman's first goal of his career.
The Dukes held off the attack and took a 3-1 lead in the 70th minute when Kurt Morsink recorded his second goal of the game, off of a direct corner kick. Morsink hit a curving kick from the left corner that missed the jumping pack of players, and rolled to the back of the net. It was Morsink's third goal in the last two games and seventh of the season.
Just nine minutes later, Britton added an insurance goal to put the Dukes up 4-1. Britton receieved a pass from red-shirt junior Andrew Walker (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) and then beat the goalkeeper and shot the ball in from five yards out. It was Britton's second goal of the game and seventh of the year, which ties him with Kurt Morsink for the team lead.
In the 85th minute, freshman Kyle Morsink (San Jose, Costa Rica/Lincoln) added a fifth and final goal for JMU when he scored on a breakaway to give the Dukes a 5-1 lead. Morsink received a pass from freshman Nick Zimmerman (Tampa Bay, Fla./Wharton) and found himself alo
