SOFTBALL DEFEATS BETHUNE-COOKMAN, FALLS TO FLORIDA ATLANTIC

Five Dukes had multiple hits against Bethune-Cookman led by freshman Brittney Lyddane (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park) who went 3-for-3 with an RBI and scored four times. Lyddane scored the first run for the Dukes in the first inning when sophomore Julia Dominguez (Sterling, Va./Park View) sent a ball to the left-field fence for a double.
Freshman Brittney Dyson (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) made her presence felt on her first at bat to lead off the second inning when she sent a ball over the left-field fence for her first collegiate home run. Dyson went 2-for-3 with three RBIs against the Wildcats.
Junior Jenn Chavez (Upland, Calif., Upland) added two hits that led to three RBIs and scored once. Two of her RBIs came in the fifth inning when Chavez blasted a ball to right-center for a triple. The runs would give JMU a 10-0 lead and be the last of the game.
Sophomore Jenny Clohan (Asburn, Va./Broad Run) pitched a shutout going all five innings for the Dukes, giving up no runs on five hits and striking out five.
In game two against Florida Atlantic, JMU struck first in the bottom of the fourth inning when Dominguez blasted her second home run of the season, over the left field fence, giving the Dukes a 1-0 lead.
JMU would strike again in the bottom of the fifth when Lyddane hit a single through the right side, scoring Courtney Simons (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) from third.
In the top of the sixth, the Owls had their rally. Florida Atlantic put up five runs on three hits and was helped by three errors in the inning. The rally gave the Owls a 5-2 lead going into the bottom of the sixth.
The bottom of the sixth and top of the seventh saw no change and the Dukes came up in the bottom of the seventh with their last chance.
Simons lead off with a single down the right-field line and later advanced to second on a passed ball. Senior Katie George (Virginia, Beach, Va./Tallwood) had a single with one out to advance Simons to third. Lyddane then came up and roped a single into right field scoring two and putting the Dukes within one.
Dominguez was intentionally walked with Lyddane on third and two outs. The Owls were able to force the next batter into a pop-up to the second baseman and hold on for the win.
Sophomore Meredith Felts (Greenville, N.C./J.H. Rose) started the game for the Dukes going giving up five runs, of which three were earned, on four hits and striking out six in 5 1/3 innings. Freshman Branden Moss (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) came in for he final 1 2/3 innings giving up no runs, no hits, and striking out two.
The Dukes will play Jacksonville at 9 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 24 and Texas Tech at 4 p.m. Both games will be available through stat tracker on the Florida Atlantic softball Web site at FAUsports.com.
