FELTS PITCHES SHUTOUT IN SOFTBALL WIN OVER BINGHAMTON

GREENVILLE, N.C., March 2, 2007 ? Sophomore pitcher Meredith Felts (Greenville, N.C./J.H. Rose) pitched a three-hit shutout against the Binghamton Bearcats as she returned to her hometown of Greenville. Felts struck out 11 batters and led the Dukes to a 6-0 victory.
JMU got on the board in the third inning when sophomore Amber Kirk (Hamilton, Va./Loudon County) doubled to left center and knocking in senior teammate Katie George (Virginia Beach, Va./Tallwood) who led off the inning with a double of her own.
The Dukes would get another run in the second when sophomore Julia Dominguez (Sterling, Va./Park View) scored on a wild pitch.
In the fifth inning, George again led off with a hit and scored when Jenn Chavez (Upland, Calif./Upland) roped a single through the right side.
Kirk singled later in the inning and Chavez scored to give the Dukes a 4-0 lead. Freshman Courtney Simons (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) added an RBI with a single of her own to knock in freshman Kendra Johnson (Virginia Beach, Va./Green Run) who was pinch running.
The Dukes had a 5-0 lead after five innings and added one more in the bottom of the sixth to defeat the Bearcats.
JMU will return to action tomorrow against Vermont at noon and East Carolina at 4 p.m.
