SOFTBALL SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER WITH GEORGIA STATE

Georgia State won game two on the pitching of Ashley Cowan who pitched a four-hit shutout against the Dukes. The Panthers got on the board early when Jackie Jeagle hit a double to right center that scored two runs and gave the Panthers a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Georgia State added two more in the third inning when Lily Skelton doubled down the left field line and two more runs scored to give the Panthers a 4-0 lead that held.
The Dukes threatened to score in the fifth inning when Jenny Clohan (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) doubled to right center and Julia Dominguez (Sterling, Va./Park View) advanced to third. Cowan forced the next batter into a ground out to end the inning.
Branden Moss (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) started the game for the Dukes and went 2 2/3 innings giving up four runs on seven hits and striking out two before she was relieved by Meredith Felts (Greenville, N.C./J. H. Rose) who went the final 4 1/3 innings giving up no runs, on no hits and striking out two.
In game one, JMU scored the first run in the bottom of the third inning when Jenn Chavez (Upland, Calif./Upland) singled to center field and Brittney Lyddane (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park) came home from third.
The Panthers tied the game at one in the top of the fourth when Jessica Jaegle scored on a passed ball before a ground out to second base ended the inning.
The Dukes took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth when Kaitlyn Wernsing (Clemmons, N.C./West Forsyth) knocked in Courtney Simons (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) with a single up the middle.
Clohan held the lead and earned the win in the circle for the Dukes pitching a complete game while giving up one unearned run, on seven hits, and striking out four.
The Dukes take on the Panthers again on Sunday at 12 p.m. at the JMU Softball Complex.
