EAST CAROLINA DEFEATS JMU SOFTBALL 5-0

GREENVILLE, N.C., MARCH 5, 2007 ? The East Carolina University Pirates scored their first run in the bottom of the second when Beth Nolan singled and teammate Erin St. ledger scored. The Pirates would not give up the lead and held the Dukes scoreless behind the pitching of Toni Paisley who pitched a complete game and only gave up four hits.
The Pirates would add a run in the third and fourth innings and then two more in the sixth when Jessica Johnson hit a two-run home run over the left center field fence to give ECU a 5-0 victory.
The Dukes were held hitless until the top of the fifth when Katie George (Virginia Beach, Va./Tallwood) lined a shot to third and reached first.
The Dukes best chance to get back into the game came in the top of the sixth after Julia Dominguez (Sterling, Va./Park View) singled with one out. Lauren Mernin (Herndon, Va./Herndon) and Kaitlyn Wernsing (Clemmons, N.C./West Forsyth) followed with singles of their own to load the bases with two outs.
Jenny Clohan (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) came to the plate and hit a rope that was heading for the gap in the middle of the defense, but the second baseman made a stab on the run to catch the line drive and end the inning.
Branden Moss (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) started the game at pitcher for the Dukes and went 4 1/3 innings giving up three runs, two of which were earned, on seven hits and striking out two.
Clohan pitched in relief going the final 1 2/3 innings giving up two runs on two hits.
The Dukes will be back in action on March 7 when they travel to Norfolk State for a double header. The games are scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
