ELON, N.C., February 23, 2008 ? The JMU women's softball team took both ends of its doubleheader Saturday, beating Georgetown and Elon 2-1. The Dukes improved to 4-2 on the season.
Junior right-hander Meredith Felts (Greenville, N.C./J.H. Rose) pitched eight innings of relief and picked up both wins for Madison. She game up no hits, no runs, one walk and struck out nine. She didn't allow a single runner past first base and faced the minimum 24 batters in her eight innings.
Felts improved her record to 2-2 this season.
Freshman catcher Katie Spitzer (Broadway, Va./Broadway) made the most of her first career hit as a Duke, driving in the winning run against Elon. Spitzer entered the game as a pinch hitter with the base loaded and one out. She drove a single through the left side that plated junior second baseman Kaitlyn Wernsing (Clemmons, N.C./ West Forsyth).
Spitzer went 1-for-2 on the day, with a walk and an RBI.
Wernsing collected JMU's other game winning RBI in the bottom of the eighth inning against Georgetown. Freshman third baseman Lauren Robison (St. Leonard, Md./Calvert) started the inning on second base and was sacrificed to third. Wernsing followed that with a sacrifice fly to left field.
Wernsing finished the day 1-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI.
