HARRISONBURG, Va., March 21, 2008 ? The JMU softball team opened up Colonial Athletic Association play Friday by splitting a doubleheader with six-time defending champion Hofstra.
The Dukes won the second game of the day 3-0 to run their record to 14-12 overall this season and 1-1 in the CAA. Hofstra took the first game 9-0 and is 14-8 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
In the second game of the day, JMU got a complete-game shutout from junior right-hander Meredith Felts as well as an RBI double from junior third baseman Amber Kirk to pull out the 3-0 win.
Felts, who had missed the week and a half with an injury, returned to JMU's lineup, scattering four Pride hits through seven innings. The Greenville, N.C., native struck out seven and walked one, while throwing 61 of her 101 pitches for strikes. She improved her record to 5-5 this season.
In the first inning, leadoff batter Kristine Root walked and stole second to put Felts in an early jam, but she responded by striking out the side to escape the inning.
The Pride's only other threat came in the fifth inning when they loaded the bases on an error, a hit batsman and an infield single. Felts was able to get out of trouble again with a strikeout and an inning-ending groundout.
JMU was able to score its first run of the day in the bottom of the third inning. Freshman shortstop Melissa Hill got the Dukes started, lacing a one-out double to left field and advancing to third on sophomore left fielder Shannon Moxey's groundout. She would score on an error by Hofstra.
