HARRISONBURG, Va., May 3, 2008 ? The James Madison softball team got a pair of complete-game wins from its starting pitchers as the Dukes swept a doubleheader against Delaware Saturday. The Dukes took the first game 5-2 and game two 4-1.
Madison improved to 29-20 overall and 13-6 in the Colonial Athletic Association as the Dukes ran their winning streak to a season-best 10 games. The pair of wins along with a pair of Drexel losses to Georgia State earlier in the day allowed Madison to clinch a spot in next weekend's CAA tournament.
Delaware dropped to 22-25 overall and 4-16 in the CAA.
In game two, JMU got the 11th complete game of the season from junior right-hander Jenny Clohan (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) as she improved to 10-7 this season. She allowed two hits, one earned run, walked four and struck out 10.
Offensively the Dukes picked up nine hits including three from junior third baseman Amber Kirk (Hamilton, Va./Loudoun County) and two each from sophomore right fielder Shannon Moxey (Church Road, Va./Mills Godwin) and sophomore designated player Lauren Mernin (Herndon, Va./Herndon).
JMU opened the scoring by manufacturing a run with small ball in the bottom of the third inning. Mernin led off the inning with an infield single and was pinch run for by junior outfielder Megan Forbes (Fincastle, Va./Lord Botetourt). Forbes advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and took third on her 12th stolen base of the season. Moxey plated Forbes with a double to right field, picking up her 22nd RBI of the season and her team-leading 13th double.
The Blue Hens came right back to even the score in the top of the fourth innings on an RBI double by left fielder Shanette White. Shortstop Quinn Megargel led off the inning with a walk before Clohan got the next two batters to pop out. White picked up her teammates driving Clohan's first pitch to left center, scoring Megargel from first. It was the first hit of the game for Delaware.
