TOWSON, Md., April 12, 2009 ? The James Madison softball team split a Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader with Towson on Sunday. Towson won the opener 2-1, and JMU took the second game 6-0.
The Dukes improved to 23-13 overall and 3-8 in the CAA while Towson is now 24-12 and 8-4.
Game two featured a pitchers' duel between Towson right-hander Kelly Ebner and JMU senior right-hander Meredith Felts (Greenville, N.C./J.H. Rose). The duo traded scoreless frames through the first five innings.
JMU broke up the pitchers' duel in the top of the sixth inning as junior first baseman Shannon Moxey (Church Road, Va./Mills Godwin) led off the inning with a single through the right side. Sophomore shortstop Melissa Hill (Santee, Calif./Mills Godwin) entered the game as a pinch runner and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and a stolen base. She came in to score on a single to right field by sophomore designated player Katie Spitzer (Broadway, Va./Broadway). JMU made it 4-0 three batters later on the first career home run by freshman second baseman Michelle Clohan (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run). With runners on second and third and two outs, the Ashburn, Va. native worked a 2-1 count before turning on a pitch and dropping it over the left-field fence.
All four of Clohan's hits this season have been for extra bases as the sophomore has three doubles and a home run in 16 games.
Felts took care of the rest for JMU, throwing her fifth shutout of the season to improve to 11-4. The senior cruised through the Tiger lineup, allowing just three hits and two walks while striking out five in seven innings.
