FELTS NO-HITTER HIGHLIGHTS DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP

HARRISONBURG, Va., May 1, 2009 ? JMU senior right-handers Jenny Clohan (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) and Meredith Felts (Greenville, N.C./J.H. Rose) threw back-to-back shutouts, including the first career no-hitter by Felts, to lead the Dukes to a doubleheader sweep over George Mason at the JMU Softball Complex on Friday. JMU won both games 3-0 to clinch a spot in next week's Colonial Athletic Association Championships at Hofstra University.
Madison improved to 31-14 overall and 11-8 in the CAA, while GMU fell to 16-32 and 2-18 in the conference.
Felts joined Briana Carrera (2003-06) as the only pitchers in program history to no-hit an opponent. She faced just four batters above the minimum, allowing three runners to reach on walks and one on an error to improve to 16-4 on the season. The senior extended her school record in shutouts to seven while also striking out 12 to break her own record for strikeouts in a season.
The Dukes scored a single run in the fourth and two more in the sixth to provide the offense for Felts. Senior third baseman Amber Kirk (Hamilton, Va./Loudoun County) led off the fourth with an infield single before moving to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore designated player Katie Spitzer (Broadway, Va./Broadway) and third on a single to right field by senior catcher Julia Dominguez (Sterling, Va./Park View). Freshman shortstop Ashley Burnham (Danvers, Mass./Danvers) plated Kirk with a single to left field to give Madison the 1-0 lead.
Dominguez went 2-for-3 to continue her hot streak. The reigning CAA Player of the Week has collected eight hits in her last six games.
Spitzer led off the sixth with a walk before junior pinch runner Kendra Johnson (Virginia Beach, Va./Green Run) stole second. GMU right-hander Becky Anderson retired the next batter on a flyout before Burnham reached on a fielder's choice to the
