HARRISONBURG, Va., Oct. 23, 2010 - The University of Richmond 400-yard freestyle relay team edged James Madison in the final event to lift the Spiders to a victory in a double-dual meet that also included Duquesne University at Savage Natatorium on Saturday.
The Dukes earned a split in the meet, beating Duquesne 264-83 and falling to Richmond 180-173 to run their record to 2-3 in dual meets. The Spiders beat DU 249-92 to improve to 3-2 while Duquesne opened its season at 0-2.
The Spiders held a 169-167 lead heading into the final event. UR's 400 free relay team of Laura Hines, Mina Vucic, Michelle Johnson and Charlotte Brackett finished the event in 3:30.48 to edge out the Dukes' team that finished in 3:31.84. The time by UR set a new Savage Natatorium pool record, breaking the mark previously set by Richmond in 2004.
Richmond won seven of the eight events on Saturday to help it come back from a 116-89 deficit after the first day of the meet. Jessie Krebs won the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 5:00.97 to give her three individual wins in the meet. She won the 1,000 free and the 400 individual medley on Friday.
Junior Lauren Kranz (Clifton, Va./James Robinson) finished second in the 500 free and fourth in the 100 free to record six points for Madison. Junior Catalina Mendieta (Parkland, Fla./Marjory Stoneman Douglas) and sophomore Andrea Criscuolo (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant) finished second and third in the 100 butterfly while the Dukes also got second-place finishes from senior Lisa Colapietro (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) and junior Rebecca Hunt (Glen Allen, Va./J.R. Tucker). Colapietro took second in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:23.46 and Hunt finished second in the 100 free with a 53.27.
Meghan Smith won her second event of the meet by taking first in the 200 individual medley to lead Duquesne. She won the IM with a time of 2:08.19 after also winning the 200 butterfly on Friday.
JMU returns to the pool Nov. 6-7 as it welcomes in Old Dominion, Northeastern, William and Mary and the College of Charleston for the Colonial Athletic Association POD meet.
