DAVIDSON, N.C. - The James Madison men's golf team dropped two spots in the final round and finished sixth at the 2013 Davidson Invitational, March 4-5. Due to the frost on Monday morning, the tournament, played at River Run Country Club (Par 72 - 7,208 yards), was shortened to 36 holes over the two days.
The Dukes improved three shots from the first round and posted an 15-over 303 in the final 18 holes to finish at 33-over 609. Host Davidson won the tournament at 20-over 596, four shots ahead of runner-up Marshall at 24-over 600. Radford, Elon and Gardner-Webb all tied for third at 32-over 608, one shot better than JMU.
Senior Rich Leeper (Chapel Hill, N.C./Carrboro) was the top finisher for Madison, posting a top 10 by tying for 10th at 7-over 151. Freshman Chris Kapsak (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) was one shot back at 8-over 152, tying for 15th. Junior Ben Firebaugh (Roanoke, Va./William Byrd (Newberry)) was next in a tie for 29th at 11-over 155, with junior Tucker Koch (Malvern, Pa./Malvern Prep.) next at 13-over 157, tied for 34th. Senior Ryan Vince (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) rounded out the team effort in a tie for 38th at 14-over 158. Playing as an individual, freshman Connor Walters (Salem, Va./North Cross) tied for 29th at 11-over 155, including a team-best 2-over 74 in the final round.
Davidson's Sam Echikson took home the individual title at 1-over 145, one shot better than Noah Ratner of Guilford College at 2-over 146.
The Dukes are quickly back in competition, heading to North Myrtle Beach, S.C., for the Bash at the Beach Invitational. The tournament, being played March 10-12, will be contested at the Surf Golf & Beach Club.
