PISCATAWAY, N.J. – In the final non-conference game of the 2014 regular season, James Madison field hockey fell 2-1 at Rutgers on Sunday afternoon at the Bauer Track and Field Complex in Piscataway, New Jersey.
JMU dropped to 10-6 overall (2-2 CAA) while Rutgers improved to 7-9 this season (1-6 Big Ten).
Rutgers tallied the first two scores of the game, beginning with Jasmine Cole passing the ball across the net and Rachel Yaney finishing from the left post to give RU a 1-0 lead 8:38 into the game. The Scarlet Knights pushed their lead to 2-0 when Cole deflected a shot by Sophie Wright into the cage with 12:50 to play before halftime.
Junior forward
Erin Gallivan (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) cut the Rutgers lead in half (2-1) with just over 10 minutes to go before halftime when she picked up a cross pass from redshirt-junior midfielder
Taylor West (Princess Anne, Md./Pocomoke) and finished from the right post.
Senior goalkeeper
Hannah George (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) tabbed the loss (7-5) after allowing two goals in the first half and committing five saves in the second half. Shevaun Hayes posted the win (7-9) with one goal allowed in the first half and two saves, one in each stanza.
The Scarlet Knights held a 9-7 advantage in shots, including a 6-3 overall advantage in the second half. They also took seven shots-on-goal compared to the Dukes' three shots-on-goal. JMU held the edge in penalty corners 3-1.
JMU made the final shot of each half, but could not get either into the cage. Junior midfielder
Saskia Chelmowski (Berlin, Germany/Gustav-Heinemann Oberschule) took the final shot of the first stanza with four seconds left on the clock, and the attempt went wide of the cage. West took the final shot of the game off the lone second-half JMU corner with 2:13 left in regulation, but her attempt also went wide of the cage.
The Dukes head into the final weekend of the regular season with two matches against Colonial Athletic Association foes on the docket. JMU heads to Hofstra (12-5, 3-1 CAA) on Friday, Oct. 31, before wrapping up at Northeastern (12-4, 3-1 CAA) on Sunday, Nov. 2.Â
The top four teams advance to the CAA Tournament, hosted by the top seed in the championship event. JMU currently ranks fifth in the league standings.
