No. 18 Wins 1-0 over Davidson for Third Shutout of Season
10/13/2015 8:06:00 PM | Field Hockey
HARRISONBURG, Va. – A goal by senior Danni Wilson in the 15th minute proved to be the difference in No. 18 James Madison field hockey's 1-0 win over Davidson on Tuesday night.
The lone score came after the Dukes (11-3, 4-0 CAA) earned their first penalty corner of the night against the Wildcats (7-7, 4-1 A-10). Freshman Melissa Wilken sent the ball to the top of the circle, and redshirt senior Taylor West's shot on goal was stopped by the Davidson keeper, Emily Leytham.
West secured her own rebound, but her second attempt rebounded off the stick of the left-post defender and went in the direction of Wilson, who corralled the ball and slotted it into the cage. The three-shot flurry was part of a 16-5 advantage in shots for the Dukes, including a 12-1 mark in the first half.
The victory is the third shutout of the season for the Dukes and fifth consecutive overall win. They welcome No. 4 Duke to the JMU Field Hockey Complex on Sunday, Oct. 18, at 1 p.m.
QUOTING COACH MORGAN
"When you play a team that packs it in, it's difficult. We talked about it at halftime, just spreading it out and working the ball out rather than forcing it, and we really didn't make a lot of adjustments in the second half. So not a great performance, but every performance you can really grow from and learn from, which is our goal."
