HARRISONBURG, Va. – Second-seeded and No. 15 Delaware scored a golden goal just over six minutes into overtime to secure the Colonial Athletic Association field hockey championship over top-seeded and No. 16 James Madison on Sunday afternoon.
The Blue Hens' (16-5) Lisa Giezeman scored the game-winning goal off a penalty corner rebound. Sophomore goalkeeper Sara Kraeutler made her 11th save of the afternoon on Delaware's ninth penalty corner before Giezeman collected the rebound and sent it high into the cage.
Though the Dukes (14-6) were outshot 17-9, Kraeutler stood tall in goal alongside redshirt senior Taylor West's two defensive saves. Delaware earned nine penalty corners, including two in the overtime stanza.
JMU trailed Delaware 1-0 coming out of halftime before senior Adrienne le Vatte sent a loose ball into the circle that sophomore Hannah Hall corralled to even the score in the 48th minute. The Dukes earned three penalty corners in the final 10 minutes of regulation, getting nothing to go, before successfully defending two penalty corners for the Blue Hens to close out the second period.
JMU went a perfect 6-0 during the CAA regular season and wrapped at 14-6 overall. The Dukes were ranked in the NFHCA Coaches Poll every week except the first and moved up to a season-high No. 16 in week nine.
