Dukes Close Weekend with 10-0 Loss to #5 Michigan

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Fifth-ranked Michigan held James Madison to a single hit, powering past the Dukes for a 10-0 victory in five innings on Sunday afternoon at Rhoads Stadium.
The Wolverines completed the weekend sweep to improve to 13-1 while the Dukes fell to 5-4 on the year after finishing the Easton Bama Bash with a 2-2 record.Â
Megan Betsa moved to 5-0 in the circle, pitching a complete-game one hitter as she struck out seven JMU batters while walking three. Junior pitcher Jailyn Ford dropped to 2-2 on the season after pitching just one inning, giving up four earned runs and five hits, striking out just two.
The Wolverines hit two home runs and added two extra-base hits as they accrued six runs in the second inning and four more in the third.
Lindsay Montemarano put UM ahead 2-0 when she hit a two-run home run to left field. Four batters later, Sierra Romero left the ball park with a grand slam to right center, allowing the Wolverines to seize control with a 6-0 lead. The next inning, Kelly Christner tacked on a couple more runs with a two-RBI double and the Wolverines added two more runs to complete the scoring.
Junior left fielder Hannah Hayes was the lone Duke to record a hit in the game, going 1-for-2 while three others reached base on walks.Â
Romero led Michigan with her 2-for-2 day, as she drove in a game-high five runs while scoring two herself. Three other UM players had multi-hit nights in the win.
Freshman pitcher/infielder Megan Good and junior catcher Erica Field were both recognized on the Easton Bama Bash All-Tournament Team following the event's conclusion.
Good was 1-0 with a 1.08 ERA, allowing two runs (one earned) and striking out 11 in JMU's 10-0 Friday over Lipscomb. She also led the team from the plate, hitting .400 (4-10) with three RBI, one run scored and two extra bases. Field hit .333 (4-12) with one home run, four RBI and two runs scored over the four games.
JMU returns to action Feb. 27 - March 1 when it heads to Orlando, Fla., to compete in the Citrus Classic at Disney's Wide World of Sports. The Dukes will face Minnesota and Georgia Friday, Maryland and Missouri Saturday and Penn State Sunday. The Dukes' contest with Georgia will be available on ESPN3.
