GREENVILLE, N.C. – History was made for the James Madison softball team as junior Jailyn Ford threw the program's first-ever perfect game while also breaking the career strikeout record to cap off a doubleheader sweep against East Carolina on Wednesday at the ECU Softball Stadium.
Â
The No. 23/24 Dukes stretched their program-record win streak to 25 games after downing the Pirates by 6-1 and 13-0 scores, improving to 34-6 on the season. ECU fell for the fifth and sixth straight games to drop to 11-34 on the year.
Â
Ford went the distance in game two, striking out 13 ECU batters without allowing a single player on base for the first time in the team's 14-year history. It was also the third time ever that JMU held an opponent without a hit.
Â
Needing just 11 strikeouts to make individual history, Ford also surpassed former JMU great Meredith Felts (2006-09) to become the all-time strikeouts leader at JMU, with 584, besting Felts' 581 career K's.
Â
Freshman Megan Good also tossed a complete game to notch her 20th victory in game one of the doubleheader to join Ford (24 in 2013 and 2014) and senior Heather Kiefer (20 in 2014) as the only 20-game winners in JMU single-season history.
Â
Five player hit at least .500 in the two wins as the Dukes collected a .426 team batting average, while holding the Pirates to just .045. JMU outhit ECU 29-2 while producing 11 extra base hits and two home runs.
Â
The Dukes return to action this weekend when they trek to Newark, Del., to take on Colonial Athletic Association foe Delaware in a three-game series. The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday and a single game Sunday, with noon starts on both days.
Â
