NEW MARKET, Va. - The James Madison women's cross country team produced a pair of top-five finishers and had all five scoring runners place in the top 11 as the Dukes earned second place at the JMU Invitational on a rainy Saturday morning at New Market Battlefield.
Junior Carol Strock led the Dukes with a fourth-place finish after completing the 5.2-kilometer course with a time of 19:24.60. Running just behind the lead Duke was junior Tessa Mundell, who took fifth place in 19:25.00.
JMU's second pack of runners crossed the finish line just over a half-minute later, led by freshman Olivia Viparina, who placed ninth in 20:06.20. Sophomore Erica Gray was 10th with a time of 20:09.40 and freshman Erin Saunders rounded out the team's scoring with an 11th-place showing in 20:10.70.
The Dukes tallied 39 points (4-5-9-10-11) to finish as the meet's runner-up behind champion Georgetown, which accrued 19 points (1-2-3-6-7). THe Hoyas turned in the top-three finishes, led by individual champion Samantha Nadel, who paced the 33-person, Division I field with a time of 18:37.30. Piper Donaghu was second at 18:43.80 while Autumn Eastman was third at 18:59.40. George Mason took third as a team with 74 points (8-14-15-16-21) while VCU rounded out the four-team field with 100 points (12-19-22-23-24).
Five non-Division I programs also raced in the 2015 event, with Washington and Lee claiming the team title with 19 points after finishing 1-2-3.
Following the women's portion of the race, a 7.9k men's race was held when the rains subsided. George Mason claimed victory in the Division-I competition and Washington and Lee won the Non-Division-I competition.
The Dukes return to the course on Friday, Sept. 18 when they travel to Farmville, Va., for the Longwood/adidas Invitational.
Noteworthy Strock, who finished 27th with a time of 20:15.80 at last year's JMU Invitational, showed the greatest year-over-year improvement of any runner in today's race.
