HARRISONBURG, Va. – No. 19 James Madison field hockey (6-3) dropped a 3-2 decision to No. 15 Old Dominion (6-3) on a rainy Sunday afternoon at the JMU Field Hockey Complex.
Trailing 3-2 in the closing minutes, the Dukes fought off two Monarch penalty corners to regain possession and head down field to their own attacking zone. JMU earned a corner of its own with just over a minute to play, but ODU's Kealsie Robles was able to keep a hard shot by senior Loes Stijntjes out of the cage.
A foul call against the Monarchs kept the ball in JMU's possession, but a diving effort by senior Danni Wilson went just wide of the net as the final seconds ticked off the clock.
After ODU led by as many as two goals twice, last at the 47:46 mark, Madison held the Monarchs scoreless over the final 22:14 of play. The Dukes closed the gap to one in the 56th minute when sophomore Hannah Hall dribbled into the circle and shot high into the right corner to make it 3-2.
ODU held the advantage in penalty corners 9-5, including a 6-2 edge in the second half, but JMU allowed them to capitalize just once on a set play.
JMU opens conference play next weekend with the final multi-game road trip of the season. The Dukes open Colonial Athletic Association action at Towson on Friday, Oct. 2 with a 6 p.m. contest.
QUOTING COACH MORGAN
"We came in with a really strong game plan and stuck with that game plan – we possessed the ball really well, worked the ball out and came up just a little short. We had opportunities and that's the one disappointment I have because we had quite a few opportunities that we didn't take advantage of. But as far as our fight, as far as our skill, I feel good about that."
