CLEARWATER, Fla. – No. 19 James Madison went 2-0 on day one of the Michele Smith Pediatric Cancer Foundation Invitational after downing 12th-ranked Tennessee 9-0 in five innings, followed by an 8-1 triumph against DePaul on Friday in Clearwater, Fla.
The Dukes improved to 6-1 on the year while the Volunteers fell to 4-3 and the Blue Demons dropped to 2-5.
Senior pitcher Jailyn Ford (3-0) pitched all five innings in the run-rule decision against UT, allowing just two hits to go with eight strikeouts. Sophomore pitcher Megan Good (3-1) earned the win in game two after conceding one unearned run and two hits while fanning seven DePaul batters in her six innings of work. The Blue Demons managed just three total hits in the ball game.
JMU jumped out to a three-run lead in the top of the first against the Volunteers. Good reached on a fielding error at second base, scoring both sophomore infielder Morgan Tolle and senior catcher Erica Field for the game's first two runs, and Good would score two batters later to make it 3-0.
The following inning, Good hit a two-RBI single to right, plating Tolle and Field to extend the lead to 5-0. Leading 6-0 in the fourth, junior outfielder Taylor Newton slapped a three-run home run to left field to put the Dukes ahead by nine and shutting the door on the nationally-ranked Vols.
In game two, the Dukes scratched a run in the first off a sacrifice fly by Tolle. Senior outfielder Hannah Hayes kicked off the JMU's three-run second with a RBI triple. After Hayes scored on DePaul error, Field doubled to right, scoring junior infielder Madyson Moran to put the Dukes ahead 4-0.
Moran and Tolle both homered in the fourth to extend the lead to 7-1 and Ford capped off the scoring with a solo shot in the fifth for an 8-1 advantage.
