FAIRFAX, Va. - With possible qualification to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Indoor Championships and NCAA Indoor Championships on the line, the James Madison track & field team earned multiple personal records at the Indoor George Mason Last Chance meet on Sunday.
Entering the weekend with the 24th-best indoor shot put throw in the nation at 16.41 meters, graduate student
Amber Monroe placed first in the shot put with a distance of 16.22 meters, besting the second-place finisher by almost three meters. The effort gives the Miami, Fla. native a ECAC qualifying mark for the sixth time in six meets this season.
Competing in the 400-meter dash for the first time in her collegiate career, freshman
Meredith Willis took second place in the event with a time of 57.14 seconds. With the NCAA's conversion from flat track to banked track times, Willis's time equates to a 56.39, surpassing the ECAC qualifying time needed of 57.04. The time also places Willis on the top-10 all-time performance list for the indoor 400-meter run.
Juniors
Ally Bodmer and
Summer Walter impressed as well, setting personal records in the 1,000-meter run and 60-meter hurdles, respectively. Bodmer placed fourth with a time of 3:09.81, besting her previous collegiate best of 3:17.95, which was set at the 2016 Liberty Quad. Walter turned in an excellent performance in the 60-meter hurdles prelims with a time of 8.94 seconds and then topped it with a personal-record time of 8.92 seconds in the finals. The time beats her previous mark of 9.03 seconds at the 2014 ECAC Indoor Championships and ties her for eighth on the all-time performance list with Katelyn Guerriere (2008).
Freshman
Nikki Serratore rounds out the Dukes' top efforts in Fairfax, where she matched her season-best 1.50 meters in the high jump. She also reached that height at the 2016 Sykes & Sabock Challenge Cup, hosted by Penn State.
The Dukes return to action next weekend when the ECAC Indoor Championships begin on Friday, March 4 and extend to Sunday, March 6. The meet is hosted by Boston University in Boston, Mass.
