UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The James Madison track & field team completed the first day of the Sykes & Sabock Challenge Cup on Friday night, highlighted by two record-worthy efforts and several career bests.
Of the five events that make up the pentathlon – the 60-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump and 800-meter run - freshman
Nikki Serratore set collegiate career highs in four of them.
Â
After setting the bar last weekend at Marshall University's
Thundering Herd Invite, the Lansdale, Pa., native leapt 1.50 meters in the high jump and 5.23 meters in the long jump, reached 10.50 meters in the shot put and crossed the finish line with a time 2:24.18 in the 800-meter run. The performances added up to a total point score of 3,394 points which passed teammate
Summer Walter's mark of 3,325 (Liberty Quad, 2/17/14) and moved Serratore from sixth to fifth on the all-time leaderboards.
"Nicolette had a great day in the pentathlon," Director of Track & Field and Cross Country
Ta' Frias said. "She was upset about the 60-meter hurdles, but was able to not let it get the best of her and stayed focused throughout the remainder of the competition. I am very pleased with how she did today, especially after competing in the multi-event last weekend."
Also moving up the record boards was sophomore
Aereale Scott, who competed in two events. In the 60-meter dash, Scott ran a career-best 7.71 in the preliminaries, only to cross the finish line in 7.68 seconds in the finals. Her effort was the seventh best in program history for the indoor 60, just ahead of Rhonda Mason's 1984 mark. The Dallas, Texas, native also nabbed a second-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles.
Taking on the indoor 5,000-meter run for the first time in her career, senior
Kathleen Stewart placed first in a field of 18 with a time of 17:08.79. She crossed the finish line more than five seconds before the next runner who finished the race in 17.14.5, and qualified for the Indoor Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships by finishing under the qualifying time of 17.28.24.
In the long jump, juniors
Ebony Owusu-Sampah (5.78 meters) and
Kennedy King took third and fourth place respectively with King tying her personal record of 5.77 meters, which she first set at the 2015 Indoor Patriot Games. Both athletes also qualified for the Indoor ECAC Championships.
